Moving is never quite as simple as putting everything in boxes, loading a truck, and driving to the new place. After years in the moving business, we've learned that the moves that go smoothly usually have one thing in common: a little planning before moving day. Here in Sarasota, there are also a few things that make moving different from other parts of the country. Florida heat, afternoon rain, gated communities, condos, elevators, and busy seasonal traffic can all turn a straightforward move into a long day if you aren't prepared. Whether you're moving across Sarasota, coming down from another part of Florida, or settling into the Gulf Coast for the first time, here are seven things worth knowing before the truck arrives.

Moving in Sarasota? 7 Things to Know Before Moving Day
By Frank Milz
Florida heat, afternoon rain, HOA rules, traffic, packing, and access issues can turn a Sarasota move sideways. Here are seven things worth knowing before the truck arrives.
If you have a choice, get an early start.
Moving furniture and boxes in the middle of a Sarasota afternoon can be brutal, especially during the summer. The heat and humidity take a toll on everyone involved, and certain belongings shouldn't spend hours sitting inside a hot moving truck.
Keep medications, electronics, important documents, valuables, and anything sensitive to extreme temperatures with you whenever possible.
Starting early also gives you some breathing room if the move takes longer than expected.
Anyone who has spent a summer in Sarasota knows how quickly the weather can change. Blue skies in the morning don't necessarily mean you'll have blue skies at 3:00 in the afternoon.
A little preparation goes a long way.
Boxes should be properly closed and taped rather than folded over at the top. Furniture that could be damaged by moisture should be wrapped, and the path between the house and truck should be kept as clear as possible.
An experienced Sarasota moving company should know how to work around Florida weather, but protecting your belongings starts before anything leaves the house.
This one catches people all the time.
Many Sarasota condos, gated communities, apartment buildings, and HOAs have specific rules for moving. You may need to reserve an elevator, provide proof of insurance from your moving company, use a particular entrance, protect common areas, or complete the move during certain hours.
Some buildings require advance notice before they'll allow movers onto the property.
Don't wait until moving morning to find out.
Call your property manager or HOA ahead of time and ask exactly what is required. A five-minute phone call can save you from having a moving truck sitting outside while everyone waits for permission to enter.
Sarasota has grown tremendously, and traffic can become a factor depending on where and when you're moving.
Seasonal traffic, construction, beach traffic, and busy roads such as I-75 and US-41 can add time to what looks like a short trip on a map.
If you're moving between Sarasota, Bradenton, Venice, Lakewood Ranch, or another nearby community, leave some flexibility in the schedule.
A good mover who knows the area can usually anticipate many of these issues and plan accordingly.
This might be the simplest piece of advice on the list, but it can make one of the biggest differences.
If you're packing yourself, try to have everything boxed, taped, and labeled before moving day.
When movers arrive and there are still loose items throughout the house, open boxes on the floor, and closets that haven't been touched, the entire move slows down.
Label boxes by room and clearly mark anything fragile. If something shouldn't go on the truck, separate it from everything else.
The easier it is to see what needs to be moved, the more efficiently the crew can work.
Think about the route your furniture has to travel before it reaches the truck.
Are there cars blocking the driveway? Is there enough room for a moving truck? Does the building have a loading area? Are there stairs? A long hallway? A service elevator? A gate code?
These details may seem minor, but they can have a major effect on moving day.
If you have particularly large furniture, measure doorways and tight spaces ahead of time. It's much easier to make a plan before moving day than to discover that a sofa won't fit through the front door while you're standing in the Florida heat.
There are plenty of moving companies out there, but local experience matters.
